Every certification exam assumes you already know the muscles, the movement patterns, and a handful of core principles. This lesson is the compressed version — enough to make your certification study dramatically easier, and enough to actually coach safely from day one.
You don't need a physiology degree to be a good trainer, but you do need working fluency in a few areas: which muscles do what, how to categorize any exercise by movement pattern, how the body produces energy for different types of effort, and the core principles behind why programs work at all. This lesson covers all four.
The Muscles You Actually Need to Know
Certification exams test dozens of muscle names, but in daily coaching, you'll constantly reference this shorter list:

The Six Fundamental Movement Patterns
Rather than thinking exercise-by-exercise, experienced trainers categorize by movement pattern — because it makes programming dramatically simpler. Nearly every exercise that exists falls into one or more of these six categories:
- Push — moving resistance away from the body (push-up, bench press, overhead press).
- Pull — drawing resistance toward the body (row, pull-up, lat pulldown).
- Hinge — bending at the hip with a neutral spine (deadlift, kettlebell swing, good morning).
- Squat — bending at the hip and knee together (back squat, goblet squat, lunge).
- Carry — loaded movement over distance (farmer's carry, suitcase carry).
- Core / anti-movement — resisting unwanted spinal motion (plank resists extension, Pallof press resists rotation).
A well-designed program touches most or all of these patterns across a training week — this is what "balanced programming" actually means in practice, and it's the framework you'll use constantly in Lesson 4.

Energy Systems 101
Your body uses three overlapping energy systems depending on how intense and how long an effort lasts. Understanding this is what separates trainers who can explain "why" from trainers who just copy programs.

In practice: strength work leans on the phosphagen system with long rest periods, hypertrophy and metabolic conditioning work lean on the glycolytic system, and endurance work leans on the oxidative system. Programs should be designed with the dominant energy system of the goal in mind — this is a concept every certification exam tests directly.
The Principles Behind Every Program
- SAID Principle (Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands): the body adapts specifically to the stress placed on it. Train heavy and low-rep, get stronger at heavy and low-rep. This is why program design must match the client's actual goal.
- Progressive Overload: gradually increasing the demand on the body — more weight, reps, sets, or less rest — over time. Without it, adaptation stalls. This is the single most important concept in Lesson 4.
- FITT-VP: Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type, Volume, and Progression — the variables you actually manipulate when designing a program. Every certification exam frames programming decisions in these terms.
- Recovery & Supercompensation: adaptation happens during rest, not during the workout itself. A program without planned recovery is not a complete program.
These four concepts, plus the movement patterns above, form the backbone of nearly everything you'll be tested on and everything you'll actually use while coaching. Lesson 4 puts them into practice by building a real program.
