About This Chronotype Quiz

Your chronotype — whether you're a natural morning person or a committed night owl — isn't a lifestyle choice. It's biology. Largely determined by genetics (the PER3 gene in particular), your chronotype governs when your body peaks in energy, alertness, and physical performance. Understanding it lets you schedule your most important work, exercise, and social commitments around your actual biology rather than fighting it every day.

The Science Behind It

The four-chronotype model was popularised by Dr. Michael Breus, building on decades of circadian rhythm research including the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) developed by Horne & Östberg in 1976.

Chronotype has a genetic basis — variants in the PER3 gene are strongly associated with morning vs. evening preference. It also shifts with age: most people move toward an evening preference in adolescence, then back toward morning preference as they pass their mid-20s.

  • Social jet lag: The gap between your biological clock and your work schedule. Chronic misalignment is linked to obesity, depression, and metabolic disease.
  • Chronotype is not discipline: A Wolf can't become a Lion through habits. You can shift your clock by 1–2 hours, but not 4.

Can my chronotype change?
Yes, slowly and mainly with age. Teenagers shift toward Wolf (the classic teen night-owl phase). After ~20, most people drift back toward Bear or Lion. Dramatic lifestyle changes — like having a baby — can temporarily shift your pattern, but your genetic baseline is fairly stable.
Can I change my chronotype through habits?
You can shift your rhythm by 1–2 hours through consistent wake times, morning light exposure, and strict meal timing. But you can't turn a Wolf into a Lion. The research is clear: fighting your chronotype long-term creates "social jet lag" that damages health, mood, and cognition.
What is social jet lag?
Social jet lag is the gap between your biological clock and your social schedule. If your body wants to sleep 1 AM–9 AM but your job forces a 6 AM wake-up, you experience the equivalent of flying two time zones west every weekday. Studies link it to higher rates of obesity, depression, and cardiovascular disease.
Is the Lion/Bear/Wolf/Dolphin model scientific?
