The critical insight from this table is that deep NREM and REM sleep are not interchangeable. You cannot swap deep sleep for extra REM or vice versa. Both are essential, and both are lost in different ways when sleep is cut short.
Because REM sleep dominates the second half of the night, cutting sleep by even 90 minutes disproportionately reduces REM. Someone sleeping 6 hours instead of 7.5 loses roughly 60–90% of their REM sleep — not just 20%. This is the reason waking at the end of a complete cycle feels so different from waking mid-cycle. At the end of a cycle, you're naturally in the lightest stage of sleep. Mid-cycle, you may be in deep NREM — the hardest stage to wake from.
The groggy, disoriented feeling of waking from deep sleep is called sleep inertia. It can last 15 to 60 minutes and significantly impairs performance, mood, and reaction time. 7.5 hours = 5 complete 90-minute cycles. Wake at the end of the fifth cycle and you're in light sleep — alert and ready. 8 hours = 5 cycles plus 30 minutes into a sixth. Wake at this point and you're mid-deep-sleep or mid-REM — groggy and disoriented. These are falling-asleep times, not getting-into-bed times. If it typically takes you 15 to 20 minutes to fall asleep — which is normal — add that time to your bedtime. If you're falling asleep in under 5 minutes, you're likely carrying a significant sleep debt.
