Progressive overload means that over time, the demands placed on your body must increase. Your body adapts to the stresses placed on it — this is the basis of all training adaptation. Once it has adapted to a specific level of stress, that level no longer produces further adaptation. To keep improving, the stress must keep increasing.

In practical terms: if you do 3 sets of 10 push-ups every session for six weeks and never change anything, your body adapts to 3 sets of 10 push-ups — and then stops. Core work: a different kind of exercise

Core training is not about doing crunches. The core's primary function is stabilisation — resisting unwanted movement of the spine under load — not generating movement. The exercises that train this best are anti-extension (planks, dead bugs), anti-rotation (side planks, Pallof press variations), and anti-lateral-flexion (single-leg movements, suitcase holds).

Crunches train spinal flexion — not the core's primary function, and high-volume crunches can create anterior chain tightness that contributes to lower back discomfort. Replace them with planks and dead bugs and you will develop more functional core strength with less injury risk.

Training Frequency: How Often Should You Actually Train?

Training frequency is one of the most debated variables in exercise programming and one of the most over-complicated. The research is actually fairly clear.

Total weekly training volume (total sets per muscle group per week) is more important than the specific frequency at which it is delivered — up to a point. 12 sets of push variations spread across 3 sessions produces similar muscle development to 12 sets spread across 6 sessions, as long as each session is executed properly.
