NASM CNC Exam Snapshot
Blueprint verified as of September 2026 — re-check every 6 months against NASM's official CNC pages
Time limit
90 minutes, open-book
Passing score
70%, up to 3 attempts
Format, passing score and attempts are confirmed against NASM's own CNC product and curriculum pages, verified September 2026. NASM presents the course in four sections — Professional Practice, Nutrition Science, Behavior Change Strategies and Practical Nutrition Coaching — covering 24 chapters. Recertification is every two years. Pricing changes often with NASM's promotions and payment plans, so check the current price on nasm.org. Always confirm cost, format and policies directly with NASM before enrolling — this page is a study aid, not a substitute for NASM's official information.
Open-book doesn't mean easy. The CNC exam lets you refer back to the course — but you get 90 minutes for 100 questions. That's about
54 seconds per question, which leaves time to look up a handful of answers, not most of them. This course is built around that: every lesson ends with an "exam lookup tip," and the free
Chapter Lookup Map shows you which chapter holds the facts you're most likely to need in a hurry.
📖
One Lesson Per Chapter
Lesson 6 is Chapter 6. Every lesson maps one-to-one onto NASM's 24 chapters, grouped under its current four sections — so you can move between these notes and the official course without ever getting lost.
⏱️
Built for a Timed, Open-Book Exam
Lookup tips in every lesson, a one-page Chapter Lookup Map, and a practice exam with the real 90-minute clock — so you practise finding answers at exam speed, not just reading about them.

- You hold or are working toward a personal training certification and want to add nutrition coaching.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will this course certify me as a NASM Certified Nutrition Coach?
No. This is a free, independent study resource — it does not issue NASM's credential. To become a NASM Certified Nutrition Coach, you purchase the course and pass the exam directly through NASM.
Is this affiliated with NASM?
No. The Flex Cult is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). "NASM," "NASM-CNC," and "Certified Nutrition Coach" are trademarks of their respective owners.
Is the NASM CNC exam open-book?
Yes. NASM allows you to refer back to the course material during the exam. But it is also timed — 100 questions in 90 minutes, or about 54 seconds per question — so you only have time to look up a handful of answers. Knowing the material, and knowing exactly where to find the rest, is what gets you through.
How is the CNC different from the nutrition chapter in NASM-CPT?
NASM-CPT covers nutrition and supplements in a couple of chapters as part of a personal training certification. The CNC is a full 24-chapter course dedicated to nutrition science, behaviour change and practical nutrition coaching.
Should I choose NASM CNC or Precision Nutrition Level 1?
Both are respected nutrition coaching programs. The CNC puts more weight on nutrition science and uses a single timed, open-book final exam. Precision Nutrition Level 1 leans further into coaching methodology and uses untimed, open-book chapter exams. Many coaches pick based on which emphasis fits them — we have a free study course for each.
Is the NASM CNC accredited?
NASM describes the CNC as a certificate program that is not accredited by a third-party accrediting organization. Check nasm.org for its current status.
Can I give nutrition advice after earning the CNC?
It depends on where you live and work. In many countries and regions, titles like "dietitian" or "nutritionist" and giving nutrition advice to treat medical conditions are regulated. Always check the rules where you practise, stay within a coach's scope, and refer clients with medical conditions to a doctor or registered dietitian.
Are the practice questions real NASM exam questions?
No. Every practice question in this course was written originally by The Flex Cult, based on NASM's publicly described CNC curriculum — not copied or leaked from the real exam.
